Either a Freedmen's school in Edisto Island, South Carolina or a contraband (escaped slave) chapel in Beaufort, S.C., between 1862 and 1865. The caption when the picture was published in a book says it was a Freedmen's school. A handwritten note on the back of the picture says it was a contraband chapel.
